Questions we discussed

Q1 How did you get into Internet Marketing? What’s your story?

I started out as a blogger, writing about social media for associations and nonprofits as I was trying stuff out at my own org. I was persuaded by another blogger! My first blog was called Diary of a Reluctant Blogger! ?

Then I got requests to help other nonprofits with social media, and eventually launched SocialFish. It was a consulting firm and still is a big social media blog for nonprofits, approx 30 writers. Then got acqui-hired by ICF Interactive, and promptly left to write books and start my culture change firm, Culture That Works ?

Q2 How did social media change during the past years? Is there anything that remained constant (except for change)? What’s the future?

SM changes all the time, that is the beauty of it. But it also became more integrated, more mainstream. Good and bad there. Many more organizations hiring for social media positions = good. Relegating it to marketing = bad.

Lots of people have stopped blogging, and nobody comments on blog posts any more either.

Q3 Please name a (recent) social media change you’ve been most excited about?

The rise of middle ware tools to hack your social media – IFTTT, Dlvr.it, Zapier…. LOVE. I don’t know if that’s a recent change but mentioning them anyway ?

Also the rise in ESNs (enterprise social networks) and private online communities for organizations!

Q4 What’s your favorite social media network and why?

I’ll always have a fondness for Twitter, and this chat is why – meeting awesome people, talking about cool stuff in real time.

Just want to add one I love to balance things out – Medium. Have read some fantastic writing on there.

OK. Snapchat? WTF. I got ONE gross picture from some stranger and uninstalled it immediately.

I’m undecided about Ello, it seems pretty misogynistic. But still pondering. When I joined, all I saw was naked girls on bikes. !!! I think they have improved that since, but first impressions…

Another one I hate = Yo. I mean seriously. The world has gone mad.

Q5 How can one get organized while being at social media? How to get things done when you have to keep an eye on the buzzing social media world?

A good monitoring tool is essential. Listening and responding is so much more important than broadcasting your own stuff.
